When to change water—and when the piece needs cleaning
A practical routine for water changes, overnight storage, and equipment care.
On smaller screens, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| What you find | Next action | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Used water; no obvious deposit | Empty it and follow the model’s rinse and drying instructions. | A visual check cannot certify hygiene. |
| Brown film, floating debris, or persistent odor | Empty and clean the affected parts as directed. | Topping up will not remove attached residue. |
| Water left overnight or longer | Discard it; inspect the equipment before refilling. | Elapsed time is not a safety test. |
| Suspected mold, damaged parts, or inaccessible deposits | Keep it out of use; ask the maker about cleaning or replacement. | Appearance alone cannot identify contamination. |
Finished for the evening or returning later today? Use the table to choose between changing water, cleaning surfaces, and addressing damage.
For cleaning methods, use the linked guide and the instructions for your exact equipment.
Prepared for the Mary Jane’s Bakery Co Editorial Team · October 2026. Based on published manufacturer care guidance and the health sources below. No hands-on microbiology testing or medical review was performed.
1. Use fresh water for each session
A session means one sitting here. Returning later that day means fresh water. This is a practical convention, not a medical interval. GRAV’s Deco Beaker care guide recommends emptying and rinsing after each session.
Let hot components cool before handling. Empty used water when finished, then follow the model’s rinse and drying instructions before storage.
A small bubbler needs the same attention to used water. Compare bubblers and bongs for construction and cleaning-access differences.
2. Deal with water left overnight
Empty overnight water. Check the walls, stem, and enclosed chambers before refilling. Persistent odor or deposits need the model’s cleaning procedure; unexplained contamination needs manufacturer support.
Brown water, floating debris, and an unusual smell are reasons to act. Their absence does not prove cleanliness. Do not deliberately leave used water sitting in the piece.
3. Know when a refill is not enough
Sticky walls or a coated stem need surface cleaning. Check the mouthpiece, bowl, joints, and enclosed chambers. Detach only removable parts.
“Glass bong” does not mean every part is glass. GRAV’s Deco instructions separate its silicone pieces from the glass. Session Goods’ Cyan instructions also specify removing the silicone footer, tab, and grommets before glass cleaning. These are model examples, not Mary Jane’s inventory claims.
Use the exact cleaner label and model instructions for rinsing and drying. Do not heat cleaning alcohol, mix cleaners, or assume boiling or dishwashing is permitted.
Keep unexplained or inaccessible deposits out of use pending manufacturer advice. Cleaning cannot repair cracks. Complete the prescribed rinse and drying; absence of odor cannot confirm completion.
The alcohol-free cleaning guide explains the cleaning process. If the issue is a missing or damaged component, check what to ask before buying a replacement.
4. Understand the health evidence
A 2018 case report describes a serious Pseudomonas lung infection associated with bong use. The report supports taking contamination seriously; one case cannot tell us how common this is or establish a universal cleaning deadline.
Water care cannot make inhaling smoke harmless. CDC’s cannabis and lung health guidance explains that smoked cannabis can damage lung tissue regardless of how it is smoked.
Do not diagnose infection from water color. Seek medical advice for new or worsening breathing problems. MedlinePlus advises emergency care when breathing difficulty starts suddenly or seriously interferes with breathing or talking.
5. Check equipment options with Mary Jane’s in Miami
Identify the model and needed item before asking about a cleaner or replacement.
Mary Jane’s Bakery Co lists a 24-hour Miami smoke shop at 175 NW 14th St. Confirm the exact item, compatibility, price, and availability before visiting.
Use this message when calling 305-930-3434 or completing the contact form:
“My device is [brand/model], made from [material]. I need [cleaner or exact part]. The manufacturer lists [fitting/specification], and the issue is [brief description]. Do you have a suitable option, and what is the current price?”
Availability and compatibility must be confirmed. This guide does not confirm stock of cleaners, parts, or complete water pipes.
Unknown model or fitting? Say so. Residue alone does not justify buying a complete replacement.
6. Sources and what they support
| Source | Supports |
|---|---|
| GRAV care guidance | Session-based emptying/rinsing and separate care of the Deco Beaker’s glass and silicone parts. |
| Respirology Case Reports / PubMed | A reported infection associated with bong use; not a population risk estimate. |
| CDC: Cannabis and Lung Health | Smoke-related lung risks persist across smoking methods. |
| MedlinePlus: Breathing difficulty | When breathing symptoms require medical or emergency care. |
| Session Goods: Cyan care | Specified silicone components are removed before cleaning that model’s glass. |
7. Common questions
Does “every session” mean after every bowl?
Here it means one sitting, not a fixed bowl count. Empty afterward; use fresh water when returning later. Replace it sooner if debris appears.
Should I change water even if it still looks clear?
Yes. The routine does not depend on visible discoloration. Clear appearance cannot confirm hygiene or replace the equipment’s cleaning instructions.
Does an ash catcher remove the need to change water?
No. An attachment adds another component to maintain. Follow its own care directions as well as those for the main piece.
What if I do not know the replacement fitting size?
Check both the connection and required length in the manufacturer’s documentation. In TAG’s sizing system, an 18/14MM stem connects an 18MM pipe joint to a 14MM slide; insert length is a separate requirement. That example does not establish compatibility with your device.
8. Make emptying part of the routine
Empty after the sitting, inspect the equipment, and complete its care steps. If the next decision is a cleaner or replacement part, identify the model before spending money.
